Varelse
Varelse is a quartet that masterfully blends modern and traditional Scandinavian folk music, a unique fusion born from a mutual interest among four talented musicians. The band's inception in the autumn of 2018 marked the end of Amy Hakanson's search for like-minded musicians after her return from studying Scandinavian folk music in Sweden. She teamed up with Collin Stackhouse, Joe Pomianek, and Steven Skolnik, and together, they have been redefining the boundaries of instrumental folk fusion. Their distinct musical backgrounds provide the rich tapestry upon which they've created their debut album, "Creature Comforts," and their continuing collaborative efforts.
Their live performances are a testament to their musical prowess and creative exploration, featuring tunes from their debut album, new compositions, and innovative arrangements of traditional melodies from Scandinavia, the British Isles, and North America. Each member brings a unique and complementary skill set: Amy Hakanson, with her mastery of the nyckelharpa and fiddle; Collin Stackhouse, known for his modern vocal edge and fiddling roots; Steven Skolnik, a versatile percussionist who started his music journey at a young age; and Joe Pomianek, who lends his smooth style on both guitar and mandolin. Together, they form the essence of Varelse, an ensemble that continues to push the boundaries of folk music while honoring its traditions.
